The rhythmic Ka-thunk Ka-thunk Ka-thunk echoing under the Story Bridge was inspirational. Previously we had not had a strong design driving point over 'hanging it from the bridge'. We had had no idea what we wanted people to learn or reflect on in this space.

Exploring under the Bridge changed this. The sound became the driving point.

It was a reminder of the outside world, of a city that was growing at one of the fastest rates in Australia. The sound of one car going over, then another, and then another, each producing its own ka-thunk, began to typify the city in one symbolic sound.

Considering what the city might look like as a sound wave sparked the design process. Just what is the city’s sound form? The sound of the city is not something which remains constant; the political, social and (predominantly) physical changes that have taken place in the city over time influence the frequency and form of the sound wave. These considerations regarding population, demographics and layout of the city informed the design of the Folie.
